Appreciation vs. recognition
Appreciation versus recognition. What’s the difference?
Simply put, we recognize something someone does: “Claire, you did a great job on your presentation”.
We appreciate someone for who they are: “Claire, you are a hard worker.”
When we recognize, it’s received as a nice pat on the back. When we appreciate, we are highlighting that person’s value. It’s the difference between a few but very distinct words.
So which one is the right one?
Both. In some cases, acknowledging hard work for a specific task is important. But if you are looking to leave a mark on that person- then appreciation in the route to take.
Think back to feedback you have received. Which ones stand out?
Put this into practice. Try appreciating someone today and watch the impact- whether in results, attitude or general disposition.
